It is a diol, which means that it contains two hydroxyl (-OH) groups. 1,3-Butanediol is an intermediate in the production of a number of chemicals, including plastics, resins, and solvents, and it has a number of industrial and commercial uses.
How is 1,3-Butanediol produced
1,3-Butanediol is typically produced by the fermentation of sugars, such as glucose, using microorganisms. It can also be produced by the hydrogenation of acetylene or by the hydrolysis of epichlorohydrin.
