What is 1,4-Butanediol

1,4-Butanediol, also known as 1,4-BD or BDO, is a clear, colorless, viscous liquid with a sweet, fruity smell. It is a diol, which means that it contains two hydroxyl (-OH) groups. 1,4-Butanediol is an intermediate in the production of a number of chemicals, including plastics, resins, and solvents, and it has a number of industrial and commercial uses.

 

How is 1,4-Butanediol produced

1,4-Butanediol is typically produced by the hydrogenation of acetylene or by the hydrolysis of epichlorohydrin. It can also be produced by the fermentation of sugars, such as glucose, using microorganisms, although this method is less common.

 

Where is 1,4-Butanediol used

1,4-Butanediol has a number of industrial and commercial uses. It is used as a solvent in the production of resins, plastics, and fibers, and it is also used as a plasticizer and a humectant in the production of cosmetics and personal care products. In addition, 1,4-Butanediol is used as a starting material in the production of a number of chemicals, including polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), which is used in the production of plastics and resins, and tetrahydrofuran (THF), which is used as a solvent and a building block for the synthesis of other chemicals.

1,4-Butanediol is also used in the production of pharmaceuticals, flavors, and fragrances, and it has been studied for use as a solvent in the production of biofuels. It is worth noting that 1,4-Butanediol can be converted into gamma-butyrolactone (GBL), a chemical that has been used as a precursor for the illicit production of the drug GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid).
