What is Acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin) and what is it used for
Acetylsalicylic acid (commonly called aspirin or ASA) is an acetylated derivative of salicylic acid and a widely used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It reduces pain, fever and inflammation and — at low doses — irreversibly inhibits platelet aggregation, so it is used to help prevent heart attacks, ischemic strokes and other thrombotic events. Common adverse effects include stomach irritation, ulcers and an increased bleeding risk.
How is Acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin) produced
Industrial aspirin is made by esterification: the phenolic OH of salicylic acid is acetylated (commonly using acetic anhydride or acetyl chloride) to give acetylsalicylic acid, followed by workup and purification (recrystallization, drying). Salicylic acid itself is produced industrially (for large scale supply) either from natural salicylates or by the Kolbe–Schmitt route from phenol/sodium phenoxide + CO₂; the aspirin reaction is then carried out at scale with control of temperature, catalysts and purification steps to meet pharmaceutical quality.
How large is the global market for Acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin)
Published market reports put the global aspirin market in the multi-billion USD range (commonly ~USD 2.3–2.7 billion for the mid-2020s) with forecasts projecting continued modest growth (CAGR ~2–5% depending on the report) through the 2020s driven by cardiovascular prevention use and demographic trends. Different research firms report somewhat different base years and forecasts (examples: ~USD 2.5–2.7B in 2024/2025 with projections toward ~USD 3–3.8B by the early-to-mid 2030s).
Where is Acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin) produced
Aspirin and bulk acetylsalicylic acid are manufactured worldwide. Production and finished-product manufacturing occur in pharmaceutical hubs across Europe (historic origin and continuing production by companies such as Bayer), North America, and large volume active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) production in Asia — especially China and India — where many generic API producers and contract manufacturers operate. Major branded and generic pharmaceutical firms and numerous regional producers supply finished tablets and bulk ASA.
