What is Antimony oxide and what is it used for
Antimony oxide (usually antimony(III) oxide, Sb2O3) is the most important commercial compound of antimony. It is principally used as a flame-retardant synergist in plastics, textiles, coatings and electrical insulation, and is also used as an opacifying/clarifying agent in glass and ceramics, as a pigment, and as a catalyst (for example in PET production and some rubber processes).
How is Antimony oxide produced
Commercial Sb2O3 is produced either by roasting antimony sulfide (stibnite, Sb2S3) concentrates in air (volatilization/fuming) so that antimony oxidises and the oxide is collected from furnace off-gas, or by oxidising/refining antimony metal and condensing the oxide fumes. Concentration/enrichment of ore is typically required before roasting, and several hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical routes (including reduction and subsequent re-oxidation steps for specific grades) are used depending on feedstock and product specification.
How large is the global market for Antimony oxide and where is it produced
The antimony/antimony trioxide market is measured in the order of about USD 0.9–1.2 billion in recent market reports (mid-2020s figures), with forecasts projecting growth through the 2020s driven by demand in flame-retardant, electronics and solar sectors. Production is highly concentrated in Asia — China is the dominant producer and supplier of antimony and Sb2O3 (providing a large share of global output), and recent export controls from China have materially affected global supply and prices. Other producing countries and regional refiners (including suppliers in Southeast Asia, Tajikistan, Russia, and smaller operations in Europe and the Americas) supply the remainder of global demand.
