What is Antimony and what is it used for
Antimony (Sb) is a brittle, silver-grey metalloid most commonly found in the mineral stibnite (Sb₂S₃). Its compounds—especially antimony trioxide (Sb₂O₃)—are used widely as flame retardants, and antimony metal is used in lead-acid battery alloys, ammunition, solder, bearings and other metal alloys, certain semiconductor and infrared detector components, glass and ceramic additives, pigments and catalysts.
How is Antimony produced
Primary production comes from mining stibnite ore, which is then roasted and smelted to remove sulfur and produce crude antimony or antimony oxide. Common routes include roasting of sulfide concentrates, followed by smelting/reduction (carbothermic or other reduction methods) and refining (including vacuum distillation or chemical purification) to make metal and Sb₂O₃. Secondary supply comes from recycling antimonial lead (e.g., recovered from spent lead-acid batteries).
How large is the global market for Antimony
Market research estimates put the global antimony market value at about USD 1.01 billion in 2023, rising to roughly USD 1.08 billion in 2024 and projected (industry forecast) to reach around USD 1.78 billion by 2032 (CAGR ≈ 6.5% for 2024–2032). Flame retardants are the single largest application segment driving demand.
Where is Antimony produced
China is by far the largest producer and holder of identified resources (responsible for a large share—around half—of global mine production in recent years), followed by smaller producers including Tajikistan, Russia, Australia, Turkey, Bolivia and Myanmar. Global identified resources are concentrated in a few countries, which gives the supply a geographically concentrated profile.
