What is Bupropion HCl and what is it used for

Bupropion hydrochloride (bupropion HCl) is the hydrochloride salt form of bupropion, an aminoketone antidepressant that acts primarily as a norepinephrine–dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI) and a nicotinic receptor antagonist. Clinically it is used to treat major depressive disorder (including sustained- and extended-release formulations), seasonal affective disorder, and as an aid for smoking cessation; it is also found as an ingredient in several combination products.

How is Bupropion HCl produced

Pharmaceutical-grade bupropion HCl is manufactured by chemical synthesis in a short multistep process: typical routes start from m-chloropropiophenone, proceed by bromination and then amination (commonly with tert-butylamine) to give the free base, and finish with formation of the hydrochloride salt and purification. Regulatory assessment reports and patent literature describe this as a two-step synthesis followed by salt formation and standard purification/quality controls; manufacturers also avoid class-I solvents and heavy-metal catalysts per regulatory submissions.

How large is the global market for Bupropion HCl and where is it produced

Market estimates vary by report and by whether one counts finished-dose products (tablets) or the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). One market research firm estimated the broader bupropion market at roughly USD 1.5 billion in 2024 with multi-year growth expected, while other reports project continued moderate growth through the 2020s. Production of bupropion API and finished products is geographically diverse: large volumes of generic API and finished bupropion products are manufactured in India and other Asian API hubs, suppliers and contract manufacturers are listed in Europe and Singapore, and multiple generic drug makers (including several active in the U.S. generic market) produce finished-dose bupropion formulations.
