What is Cephalexin and what is it used for

Cephalexin (also spelled cefalexin) is a first-generation oral cephalosporin (beta-lactam) antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections — commonly skin and soft tissue infections, otitis media (ear), respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections and bone infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell-wall synthesis and is available as capsules, tablets and oral suspension.

How is Cephalexin produced

Cephalexin is manufactured chemically or enzymatically from cephalosporin core intermediates. Typical routes start from 7-amino-desacetoxycephalosporanic acid (7-ADCA or 7-ADCA derivatives) which is acylated with a D-phenylglycine (or phenylglycine ester) derivative to give cephalexin; modern processes often use enzymatic acylation (penicillin acylase or other biocatalysts) to improve selectivity and reduce waste. Process descriptions and patents describe both classical chemical acylation and enzymatic transacylation/continuous-flow enzymatic methods.

How large is the global market for Cephalexin

Market estimates vary by source and report methodology. Recent market-research summaries place the global cephalexin market in the range of roughly USD ~1 billion (example: market reports citing ~USD 1.2B for 2024) to several billion depending on whether finished-dosage forms, salts/derivatives, or broader cephalosporin segments are included; reported CAGRs in forecasts are commonly in the mid-single digits. Because commercial market reports use different scopes and definitions, expect discrepancies between providers — treat single-report figures as indicative rather than definitive.

Where is Cephalexin produced

Cephalexin APIs and finished products are manufactured worldwide, with major API production concentrated in large pharmaceutical-chemical hubs such as India and China (many listed API manufacturers and exporters), while finished-dosage formulation and distribution occur globally (Europe, North America, Latin America, and Asia). Trade and supplier directories list numerous manufacturers and exporters across China, India, South Korea and some European suppliers; sourcing maps and bulk-API supplier lists are available from pharmaceutical directories and trade databases.
