This post is a summary of the Chloride price developments. The price developments of Chloride are expressed in US$ prices converted FX rates applicable at the time when the price was valid. Chloride price index developments are calculated from multiple separate sources of data to ensure statistical accuracy.
The outlook for Chloride prices is generated from different inputs including:
- Very recent price developments of immediate cost drivers of Chloride prices
- Recent price developments of underlying feedstocks which drive the price of Chloride
- Market futures for both cost drives and feedstocks of Chloride prices
- Adjustment of current supply/demand imbalances in the Chloride market
- Longer term trends in likely demand conditions
What is Chloride and what is it used for
“Chloride” typically refers to the chloride anion (Cl⁻) or to compounds that contain chlorine in the chloride form (for example sodium chloride, potassium chloride). Chloride ions are essential electrolytes in biology (helping osmotic balance, nerve transmission and acid–base balance) and chloride salts are widely used industrially and domestically — food seasoning and preservation (table salt), chemical feedstock (chlor-alkali industry), de-icing, water treatment, agricultural fertilizers and many industrial processes.
How is Chloride produced
Commercial chloride in the form of sodium chloride (salt) is produced by mining rock salt, extracting and evaporating brines (solar or vacuum evaporation) and by solution mining; chlorine (elemental Cl₂) and many chloride chemicals are produced by electrolysis of brine (the chlor-alkali process), which also yields sodium hydroxide and hydrogen as co-products.
How large is the global market for Chloride
Market estimates vary by scope and definition (table salt, industrial/chemical salt, and chloride chemicals). Recent industry reports place the global sodium-chloride/salt market in the low tens of billions of US dollars: for example Grand View Research estimated about USD 17.4 billion (2024 → 2025 projection), while other market research firms report larger figures (many reports place the market in roughly USD 18–30+ billion ranges depending on included end-uses and methodologies). These differences reflect varying coverage (food vs. industrial vs. chemical feedstock) and should be checked against the specific segment you care about.
Where is Chloride produced
Most chloride (as salt) is produced where large salt deposits, coastal salterns or brine resources exist. Leading salt-producing countries include China, the United States, India, Germany, Canada and Australia, with China and the U.S. among the largest producers by volume. Much of the salt used as chemical feedstock is produced in industrial facilities in these countries and in regions with large brine or rock-salt resources.
