Chloroprene price index

This post is a summary of the Chloroprene price developments. The price developments of Chloroprene are expressed in US$ prices converted FX rates applicable at the time when the price was valid. Chloroprene price index developments are calculated from multiple separate sources of data to ensure statistical accuracy.

The outlook for Chloroprene prices is generated from different inputs including:

  • Very recent price developments of immediate cost drivers of Chloroprene prices
  • Recent price developments of underlying feedstocks which drive the price of Chloroprene
  • Market futures for both cost drives and feedstocks of Chloroprene prices
  • Adjustment of current supply/demand imbalances in the Chloroprene market
  • Longer term trends in likely demand conditions

What is Chloroprene and what is it used for

Chloroprene (IUPAC: 2-chlorobuta-1,3-diene) is a colorless, volatile, flammable organic liquid used almost exclusively as the monomer to make polychloroprene — commonly known by the trade name neoprene. Polychloroprene (chloroprene rubber) is used in wetsuits, gaskets, hoses, adhesives, coatings and other applications that require oil/ozone resistance and good mechanical properties.

How is Chloroprene produced

The dominant industrial route produces chloroprene from 1,3-butadiene: chlorine is added to butadiene to give dichlorobutene isomers, which are then isomerized and dehydrochlorinated to yield chloroprene. Historically an “acetylene” route existed, but the butadiene chlorination/dehydrochlorination route is now the common process in modern plants.

How large is the global market for Chloroprene

Market reports typically measure the market for chloroprene rubber (the main downstream product). Recent industry reports put the global chloroprene/chloroprene-rubber market in the low-to-mid single-billion-USD range (examples: roughly USD 1.1–1.7 billion in 2024, with forecasts projecting moderate growth through the 2020s). Reported figures vary by data source and by whether the estimate covers monomer, finished rubber, or both.

Where is Chloroprene produced

Major production is concentrated where large petrochemical/chemical complexes exist — historically Japan, China and the United States have been important producers. Large chemical companies in Japan (for example Denka) maintain significant chloroprene/chloroprene-rubber capacity; there are also producers in China and other regions. Note that specific sites (for example Denka’s Louisiana plant) have faced regulatory, community and business pressures that have affected local production in recent years.
