What is Neomycin Sulphate and what is it used for
Neomycin Sulphate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic salt derived from the metabolic products of the bacterium Streptomyces fradiae. It works by binding to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes and inhibiting protein synthesis, thereby exerting a bactericidal effect. In human medicine, it is used topically (e.g., in creams and ointments) to prevent or treat minor skin infections, cuts and scrapes. Orally it may be used for bowel‑preparation before surgery or to reduce symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy (liver‑failure related brain dysfunction) because it stays largely in the gut and kills ammonia‑producing bacteria. It is also used in veterinary and topical formulations in animals.
How is Neomycin Sulphate used
The formulation and route of administration of Neomycin Sulphate depends on the indication. Topically it is applied as ointments or creams, often in combination with other antibiotics or steroids, for minor skin wounds or infections. Orally, it is given in tablet or solution form when used for bowel preparation or hepatic encephalopathy; because it is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, it acts locally in the intestine. In veterinary use it may be formulated for intestinal infections or other animal health contexts. Because of toxicity concerns (e.g., ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity) with systemic aminoglycosides, its use is limited, and many applications are local/topical only.
How large is the global market for Neomycin Sulphate and where is it produced
The global market size for Neomycin Sulphate varies by source but is typically in the hundreds of millions of US dollars annually. For example, one report estimated the market value at USD 0.30 billion in 2024, with growth to about USD 1.1 billion by 2033 (CAGR ~15.3%). Another source estimated volume at roughly 17 000 tonnes in 2024 with a forecast to about 30 000 tonnes by 2035. In terms of production, the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) for Neomycin Sulphate is manufactured by a number of countries. India and China are major exporters: India is noted to lead in shipments of neomycin (and by implication its sulphate form) globally. China has multiple manufacturers listed as producing Neomycin Sulphate APIs. Manufacturers also exist in Europe and the USA as API suppliers.
Note: Because of varying data sources (volume vs value, human vs veterinary uses) the numbers above should be taken as estimates rather than exact figures.
