What is Povidone‑iodine and what is it used for
Povidone‑iodine (also known as PVP‑I or iodopovidone) is a chemical complex of the polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (povidone, PVP) and elemental iodine. It serves as a broad‑spectrum antiseptic: it is used topically on the skin (and sometimes mucous membranes) to prevent or treat infections in wounds, abrasions, burns, surgical sites and for skin disinfection. It works by releasing free iodine slowly from the PVP complex, which kills bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. It is commonly used in first‑aid, hospitals (pre‑operative skin cleansing), wound care, and in some mouth and vaginal applications.
How is Povidone‑iodine made / how does it work
Povidone‑iodine is produced by combining the polymer povidone (polyvinylpyrrolidone) with iodine (I₂) and iodide ions so that the iodine is complexed by the polymer and gradually released. In use, the small amount of “free” iodine that is released from the complex is the active antimicrobial agent: it iodines lipids and oxidises cellular components of microbes, thereby killing them. The advantage of the PVP carrier is it reduces the irritation, toxicity and staining associated with free iodine solutions, and improves stability in solution. It is available in various formulations (solutions, ointments, scrubs, swabs, powders) and at commonly used concentrations (such as ~10 %).
How large is the global market for Povidone‑iodine and where is it produced
The global market for povidone‑iodine is modest in size compared to large pharma markets but steady. Recent reports estimate the market value at around **USD 145‑170 million** in 2024, with forecasts to reach about USD 240‑250 million by the early 2030s (e.g., USD 242 million by 2032). Growth is projected at a CAGR of about 4 %–5 % driven by antiseptic demand, surgical procedures and infection‐control emphasis.
As for production and supply: there are numerous manufacturers of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and finished formulations of povidone‑iodine. Key players globally include BASF SE, Glide Chem Private Limited (India), Boai NKY Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (China) among others. Geographically, China is a major production hub for PVP‑I / povidone‑iodine raw material and API, with large manufacturing clusters in provinces such as Shandong, Zhejiang and Sichuan. India also has significant manufacturing capacity and export activity.
