What is PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride) and what is it used for
Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic fluoropolymer. It is produced from the monomer vinylidene difluoride (VDF) and has excellent chemical resistance, thermal stability, mechanical strength and dielectric (electrical insulation) properties.
Because of these properties, PVDF is used in a wide variety of high-performance applications. These include chemical process industry piping and linings, ultra-pure fluid handling, insulation of wires and cables, films and sheets, membranes for water- and wastewater-treatment, medical/biomedical applications (e.g., filtration membranes), battery electrodes (especially as a binder in lithium-ion batteries), architectural coatings and building materials, and specialty sensors/transducers (because in certain crystallographic phases it can show piezoelectric behaviour).
How is PVDF produced
PVDF is produced by the radical polymerisation of the vinylidene difluoride (VDF) monomer, sometimes with optional comonomers. The polymerisation is typically carried out via either a suspension process (“S-PVDF”) or an emulsion process (“E-PVDF”), depending on the desired grade, crystallinity and molecular weight of the product.
Key process parameters include temperature (often 10-150 °C) and pressure (often up to hundreds of atmospheres) in the reactor, with initiators, chain transfer agents, stabilisers/emulsifiers and surfactants used to control polymer growth, particle size and molecular structure. After polymerisation the PVDF resin is isolated, purified, and then processed (extruded, moulded, blown film, injection, etc) into the final forms (pipes, sheets, films, coatings, membranes).
How large is the global market for PVDF and where is it produced
The global PVDF market is growing—different sources give somewhat different numbers depending on what scope (resin only, films, membranes, full products) is considered. For example:
