What is PVF (Polyvinyl fluoride) and what is it used for
Polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) is a fluoropolymer — chemically similar to PVC but with fluorine in place of chlorine — that forms tough, weather-resistant films. PVF films (commercially best known as DuPont’s Tedlar®) resist UV, chemicals, moisture and staining, so they’re widely used as protective and decorative films for building façades, roofing and siding, photovoltaic backsheets, transportation and aerospace surfaces, graphics and release liners.
How is PVF produced
PVF is made by polymerizing the vinyl fluoride monomer and converting the polymer into film by casting or biaxial orientation; manufacturers also produce PVF as coatings applied to substrates. Common industrial film processes include solution casting, extrusion and oriented stretching to achieve desired mechanical and thermal properties. Technical papers, patents and manufacturer datasheets describe polymerization control, solvent/film forming steps and post-stretching/orientation used to make commercial PVF films.
How large is the global market for PVF and where is it produced
Market estimates vary by source but put the global PVF market in the low-to-upper single-digit billions USD range for the mid-2020s (examples: ~USD 1.2–1.8 billion in some reports and higher estimates up to ~USD 4.2 billion depending on scope and forecast). Because different reports use different product scopes (films only vs films + coatings + membranes) the figures diverge — treat published numbers as estimates and check the report definitions for exact coverage.
Commercial PVF film production has historically been dominated by DuPont (Tedlar®), which supplies the PVF resin/films and works with global laminators and converters; DuPont has expanded capacity and supply arrangements (including production/partners in Asia) while many converters in Europe, China and elsewhere convert or laminate Tedlar® into finished backsheet and architectural products. In short: PVF is supplied by DuPont and processed worldwide by certified laminators and film converters.
