What is Rubber RSS3 and what is it used for
RSS3 (Ribbed Smoked Sheet — Grade 3) is a commercial grade of natural rubber produced as ribbed, coagulated sheets that are smoked to preserve and stabilise the rubber. It is a widely traded raw natural-rubber product used as a feedstock in tyre manufacturing, industrial rubber goods, hoses, belts, footwear soles and other general-purpose rubber products where good elasticity and resilience are required.
How is Rubber RSS3 produced
RSS3 is made from fresh field latex that is coagulated (usually with formic acid or similar coagulant), rolled into thin sheets which are given a ribbed pattern, dried and then smoked in smoke-houses to remove moisture and to help preserve the sheet. After smoking the sheets are visually inspected and graded (RSS1–RSS5) according to colour, purity, elasticity and other quality attributes; RSS3 sits mid-range in the smoked-sheet grading scale. The smoked sheets are commonly baled for export.
How large is the global market for Rubber RSS3
RSS3 is a component of the broader natural rubber market. Estimates of the global natural-rubber market vary by source, but recent market reports place global natural-rubber market value in the tens of billions of US dollars (estimates around ~USD 20–28 billion in the mid-2020s, depending on scope and year) and forecast modest growth over the coming decade. Market balances are tight — industry reports and news coverage indicate natural-rubber supply has been close to or below demand in recent years, which affects prices and trade flows for grades such as RSS3.
Where is Rubber RSS3 produced
Production of RSS3 (and other smoked-sheet grades) is concentrated in major natural-rubber producing countries in Asia. Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, India and Malaysia are the largest producers of natural rubber overall and are important suppliers of RSS grades; Thailand is a leading supplier and many RSS3 export shipments originate from Thailand, Vietnam and neighbouring countries. Smaller volumes also come from Sri Lanka and some West African producers that are increasing output.
