What is Rubber Unsmoked and what is it used for

“Unsmoked” rubber (commonly called Un-Smoked Sheets or USS) is a primary form of natural rubber produced as coagulated latex rolled into thin sheets but dried without the full smoking process. USS serves as an intermediate/raw form that is processed into finished sheet grades (for example ribbed smoked sheet, RSS) or converted into block/crepe/concentrated natural rubber for use in tyres, belts, hoses, adhesives and other industrial rubber goods.

How is Rubber Unsmoked produced

Production starts with collected field latex that is strained, standardized and coagulated (usually with acid). The coagulum is milled and formed into thin sheets which are then allowed to drain and dry — either by air/sun drying (producing USS) or taken on to controlled smoke-house drying to produce smoked grades (RSS). Key steps include coagulation, rolling/milling, sheet washing/dripping/drying and grading.

How large is the global market for Rubber Unsmoked and where is it produced

USS is part of the wider natural rubber value chain. Estimates for the natural rubber market (which includes sheet, block and other primary forms) place global production at roughly 15 million tonnes in recent years and a market value in the tens of billions of USD (industry reports cite ~USD 31–32 billion in 2024), with specific sub-markets for smoked/sheet rubber reported separately (industry reports value the ribbed smoked-sheet market in the low billions USD).

Where is Rubber Unsmoked produced

Major producers of natural rubber (and therefore of USS/RSS and other primary forms) are in Southeast Asia and parts of West Africa. Top producing/exporting countries include Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and India — Thailand and Indonesia are consistently the largest producers/exporters of sheet and other natural rubber forms.
