What is Structural OSB board and what is it used for
Structural oriented strand board (OSB) is an engineered wood panel made from thin rectangular wood strands (flakes) that are coated with adhesive and compressed into cross-oriented layers to form strong, dimensionally stable panels. It is widely used in load-bearing building applications such as wall, roof and floor sheathing, subfloors, roof decking, I-joist webs, structural insulated panels and other structural or semi-structural components.
How is Structural OSB board produced
Production begins with debarked logs that are shredded into strands, dried, sifted and blended with wax and synthetic resins. The strands are then formed into oriented mats (layers oriented to give strength on the panel axis), and the mats are hot-pressed to cure the resin and bond the strands into rigid panels. Finished mats are trimmed, cut to size and graded for structural use; resin systems commonly include phenol-formal-dehyde or isocyanate binders for structural and moisture-resistant grades.
How large is the global market for Structural OSB board
Estimates vary by source and metric (volume vs. value), but recent industry reports place the global OSB market in the tens of millions of cubic metres per year and tens of billions USD in value. For example, market research groups report global OSB market volumes around ~36–39 million cubic metres in the mid-2020s with forecasts of steady growth through the 2020s driven by housing and construction demand; other reports value the market at roughly USD 24–29+ billion (depending on the year and methodology).
Where is Structural OSB board produced
North America (United States and Canada) is the dominant production region and the historical centre of large OSB mill capacity; significant manufacturing also occurs in Europe (notably Germany, Poland, Romania and other Central/Eastern European countries) and in parts of Asia. Regional production footprints shift with investment cycles, mill expansions and raw-material availability, but North America continues to account for the largest share of global OSB output.
